And, yes, Mr. Gifted Universial Rhymes Unlimited was saying a bunch of bad words :-)
Here are some photos from Tuscany of the Vesterlund clan. The last pic is of Will at the top of the leaning tower of Piza.

I work in public relations…or something like that. I work for a social service organization public relation/marketing team. The “team” stuff is kind of funny since there are only TWO of us. I take care of the 2 websites, design a bunch of booklets, flyers direct mail material about adoption, foster parenting, counseling, services for people with downs syndrome etc, etc. It is OK, beats some of the crazy jobs I have had in the past and my c0-worker is easy to work with.
(Oh, by the way Folk mean “people” in Swedish).
As for Healthcare reform….well….it is crazy..
I have on purpose tuned it out during the last few months. It is obvious that SOMETHING needs to be done. US health care is very good, but it is not assessable to everyone. The whole insurance thing as a circus and even if you do your research, you still can be slapped with a hefty bill. I needed a minor medical procedure. I called the hospital and the insurance company to figure out the cost. My insurance would cover all but $35 they promised me. I later got a bill for $600!!! Apparently the anethetist bills separately and is not covered by insurance?? What the….how should I know that! I had lunch this past Tuesday with a friend. He teaches at a local University here and his wife works part time as a producer for a local TV-show. Their youngest son needed tubes in his ears. It cost a fortune and his dad was going to help out paying for it. OK, his wife only works 2 or 3 days a week, but they still have very nice jobs.
As for the secrecy…I have wondered about that too. Bush was a grand master of secret back room deals, and while I do not think two wrongs make a right (so to speak) I guess this is how things are done these days in Washington, DC. US politics is SO very infected right now. The lobbyist has both parties in their fist. The two parties cannot work together at all. A senator that votes with the other party gets into trouble. I heard that right now during the healthcare debate, there are 2.5 lobbyists PER SENATOR!!! One has to ask, is democracy for sale??
The irony is that Republicans from California and the Northern States are sometimes MORE to the left then a right leaning Democrat. It is almost like two gangs fighting over turf.
I can really relate to your newfound Pro-Britishness. I am very much the same. While I was never anti-Swedish, I thought so much stuff in Swedish culture and every day Swedish life was silly, lame or just plain dumb. I saw us sort of as a backwater nation, stuck up north and far away for all that mattered. After my first 6 months at the American university I attended I kind of changed my mind. Sure Sweden is no utopia, it is a small country with a lot of country side – but it has so many good things too. I also think we Swedes are so scared of being the dumb, hillbilly distant cousins of The US and bigger European nations like The UK, France, Germany and so on, that we sometimes forget what we are good at, both I terms of our society, fine- and pop culture, film, literature music etc. I usually say that I am Swedish in a Zlatan Ibrahimovic/Henrik Larsson type of way. What I mean is that for me, being Swedish is not some kind of blue eyed/blond haired ultra European club stuck in our own and others stereotypes about us (you know Abba, meatballs, skinny dipping in lakes etc, etc). It is kind of hard to formulate in a few words. I try not to big-up Sweden too much because I know t will annoy people.
Man am I blabbing or what. I hope I make SOME sense…
(By The way, are things as bad in Barca for Zlatan as Swedish media make it out to be?)
I can relate to the England squad too. Even sports such as Tennis that I never care for THAT much, I find myself checking online how Swedish players do in big tournaments.
About BBC. I agree it is the best news service in the world. We have BBC World Service on the radio in the morning and in the Afternoon. BBC America has World Service news in the morning and their own news (produced in DC, not UK) in the evening. I also think a lot of their TV dramas are fantastic. If one compares stuff like Spooks, Hu$tle and Life on Mars to standard US drama such as Law & Order, CSI, Desperate Housewives…I actually prefer the just listed British shows. Smarter scripts, sometimes creative camera angles and just more enjoyable entertainment, and the budget is smaller too :- )
The Absent Minded guy is quite amazing. He should probably write a book on how to NOT manage ones career. I always wondered WHAT he was up to and then he gave a big interview a few years ago. Having a serious hashish/skunk habit and verbally fighting everyone around you is probably NOT the way to go. Now he is a dedicated Muslim and seems to have kicked the skunk.
I have not had a chance to listen to Love pt 1 by Build an Ark, but I will this evening.
By The Way - Did you get any of those Swedish movies? Any more Danish directors apart from Lars Von Trier?
Peace and I am outie :-)

ReplyDelete“…but dad, he is saying bad words”.

Funny. Especially seeing as I will no doubt here the exact same words from my kid at some point in the future!
Your boys sure have grown! Ian looks like he'll be as tall as you in a few years time. Looks like you had a great time, and very good weather in Tuscanny.

Very interesting. Send me the urls for your websites?
Are you working more on content, or design, or both? Do you focus on adoption/fostering in general, or just adoption of children with
downs syndrome? Adoption/Fostering has always been an interesting topic for me...
Healthcare. So much to say that I can't get into it now, seeing as I have to leave home in about 10 minutes, and also seeing as they appear to have provisionally passed the bill yesterday. I need to read up on what's actually in it before I respond.
Crazy story though; that $600 anethetist bill must have *really* ruined your day.
Obama and secrecy is another big topic, or better yet: Obama and morality. I think that many people see him as being far more morally sound than he actually is (or could ever be)... subject for another article I think.

Sure Sweden is no utopia, it is a small country with a lot of country side – but it has so many good things too.
---
I can identify with this: I think you can only appreciate most things about your home when you're not there anymore.
---
I try not to big-up Sweden too much because I know t will annoy people.

You are a better man than me. I go out of my way to big up the UK to people over here. Although to be accurate: I only big up the UK to the Spanish people. I don't do it to The Catalan people, The Basque people and the people from South America as we're all on the same side effectively. Spain appears to be so straightforward, but in reality it is a very complicated country. ...a topic for another article I think...

I'm ashamed to say that I still haven't bought them.
They're in my play.com shopping cart but I need to get off my backside and actually buy them. Watch this space.
Right gotta run...
Ian is very tall. He was a very big baby, then things kind of “leveled out” and he was roughly the same size as other kids his age height wise, but quite skinny. He is still skinny but now he is growing super fast.
ReplyDeleteBeing in Tuscany was great. A bit short since (5 days on the ground, 2 days traveling) but I really enjoyed that part of Italy. I have been in Italy before, but the last time was back in the 90’s.
Here is our main site:
http://www.depaulcr.org/
I designed the original site, but not this new one. It was launched two weeks ago. We have changed our name and logo so I have been busy redesigning our print materials. However, I have tweaked the new site and made some changes (I actually re designed most of the front page…I am not sure how well that when down with our ad agency). Basically me and my boss/co-worker do everything with the site. My boss handles most of the content but (depending on a lot of things) I might deal with the content too.
We also have a site specifically for people interested in Fostering.
http://www.depauldifference.org/
We have four different programs. A.) Treatment Foster Care B. ) Developmental Disabilities (group homes, foster care-like homes for adults with developmental disabilities such as down’s syndrome, day centers etc), Clinical Services (Therapists, Mental Health Support etc) and Adoption (we specialize in adoption from the foster care system). Virginia ranks second to last of the US states in finding permanent homes for kids. Very, very sad. Originally our Foster care program was the MAIN program of this organization but today Develop Mental Disabilities and Clinical Services are just as big. We had a terrible shooting at the nearby university Virginia tech and after that the state realized they need to provide MUCH better help to people with mental health problems.
Yeah, it would be very interesting to hear about your thoughts on Obama. Over all I think he is OK, as far as US politics goes, but then, I have little faith in this system as it stands today. This sort of runs into my next thought…
It would be VERY, very, very interesting to hear about your thoughts and experiences from living in Spain. I have only visited Spain on vacation…and THAT was a long time ago. I knew some Spanish guys at University mainly due to my Latin American flat mates Guillermo (El Salvador) and Gonzalo (Venezuela).
Personally I could probably write a 1000 page book on The US. I doubt anyone would read it as it probably would just be ramblings. The country is on one hand VERY big and offers so much, but that offering ranges from fantastic to really crappy and everything-between. This is the topic for its separate post :-)

#Two very interesting sites, nice designs too. You guys offer a great deal of very diverse services, but then again fostering, adoption and mental health are very complex subjects.
It's surprising that Virgina has such a low rate of permanent placements for children. Then again, I imagine that Virgina is one of the wealthier states and therefore has less of the things that lead to broken families and children needing permanent care (below minimum wage employment, widespread unemployment, chronic alcohol/drug abuse...), I could be wrong though?
I've been moved onto a different project at my job, and have spent most of the week without access to a computer as a result. This is a real shame as there are some very interesting things happening with regards to The health reform bill and the Obama administration... and also with regards to Israel, the UK and ...the Obama administration. Hopefully next week I'll have more time to write.
As it stands the list of pending articles goes something like this:
Obama and morality (by me)
Spain for beginners (by me)
America for beginners (by you)
Let's see who can get their article in first...
PS: I think that "Ibra" lost a bit of his form, but seems to be getting back to his best now. He's got nothing to fear as Barca really need a good goalscorer right now. I generally tune out news regarding Barcelona football team. Mainly because the coverage we get here is way over the top. Barca and Madrid are featured in every (yes: every) news broadcast. Even if they haven't played a game that day, they show some highlights from a previous game and some footage of the teams in training or (if we're really lucky), some footage of the teams on the team bus on their way to the next game. At times it can be *really* annoying.
I will work on my America article. Huge task!!
ReplyDeleteI am not sure about how wealthy Virginia is. It is not Texas or California for sure, but the state cannot be at the bottom either. Wealth in the US seems to stick to the wealthy :-)
(Also, Virginia has hardly andy employment laws. If you loos your job, you have to LEAVE right away, if you join a union you can get fired etc, etc)
....Virginia is actually not a "state" but a Commonwealth. This has little to do with something like the British Commonwealth. (many of the original US states are oficcially called Commonwealths. I used to think it was just a name, but apparently it gives local county authorities more power)There is alot of different local laws and regulations between different counties. This generates more paperwork and issues to clear. So lets say "Jay" is about to be adopted to the "Anderson" family. The Andersons are cleared by "Jay's" home county, the county were his social worker/case worker are stationed. The Andersons are later NOT cleared in THIER home county. Mr. Anderson was found guilty of disturbing the public 15 years ago as he and his friends had a party when their favorite Baseball club won the league.
This crime would not have been a problem if The Andersons lived in the same county as "Jay".
I hope I am illustrating this in a good way. Basically, it is two sets of paper work, two set of rules. If Jay lived in another state, this would not have been an issue.
Anyhow.
Sometimes I sit and wait for input on something I work on so I can take the next step. This can get VERY booring........so I have resulted to writing a few Wikipedia pages:
Mpstly Sweden related:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stonefunkers
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martin_Mutumba
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jonas_Olsson_(footballer_born_1983)
The Stonefunkers and Martin Mutumba pages I wrote from scratch. Mutumba has since then became one of Swedens most charismatic playes so the page has been edited and updated a few times. But most of it is "my work".
Stonefunkers I acctually used a text from the lead singers home page and then re wrote alot of it plus used a few other sources I had stumbeled upon.
Jonas Olsson had a page that just stated he was a Swedish defender playing for a club in Holland, so I added on a bunch of stuff.
As my brother said...man you REALLY must be bored :-)
